Employees of Dusit Thani Dubai Go Green on Earth Day 2010
Dusit Thani Dubai joined the world in commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day on 22 April 2010. The Plant-A-Tree: A Gift to Mother Earth project was indeed a success as more than 40 individuals who planted nearly 80 trees proved that there are still those who genuinely care for the environment. Volunteers across Accounting, Sales & Marketing, Engineering, Food & Beverage, Kitchen, Rooms & Guest Services, Housekeeping and Human Resources departments proudly took part in this environmental initiative held at the hotel’s staff accommodation, Baan Dusit, in Al Quoz.
The green initiatives were headed by Dusit Thani Dubai General Manager James R. Wilson. “We at Dusit Thani Dubai take our social responsibility very seriously. We were very proud to have been the first hotel in Dusit International to receive the Green Globe Bronze Benchmarked 2010 status earlier this year in recognition of our efforts to operate in an eco-friendly manner. Today’s event is another small example of our commitment to helping provide a greener environment for this and future generations.”
Dusit Thani Dubai’s corporate social responsibilities initiatives involve not only ecological campaigns but also social campaigns, which can be seen in Dusit Thani Dubai’s Operation Smile campaign, which aims to raise funds to support Operation Smile’s mission in Kenya helping children born with facial deformities.
Guests of the hotel had taken part too in the hotel’s Earth Day celebrations as the external lighting of the hotel was turned off from 7 – 10 p.m. on Earth Day itself. Room guests were encouraged to switch off the lights in their rooms and enjoy a complimentary Earth Day special cocktail in MyBar from 7 p.m. – 12 midnight. An Earth Day Menu made from healthy ingredients and reduced energy consumption techniques was served in the Dusit Delicatessen on that day. The menu will also be available for an entire week in PAX, the hotel’s Italian restaurant located on the 24th Floor. All of the ingredients for the dishes are from neighboring countries within the Gulf region, so as to help reduce carbon footprint for transportation.
The Earth Day Menu features: Warm Salad of Bell Pepper, Eggplant and Portobello Mushroom (the vegetables are pan-fried with olive oil on a gas stove, with a short burst of energy and not needing the use of prolonged electricity); Grilled Hammour fillet with black chopped olives, capers and a sauce of sun-dried tomatoes, served with roast potatoes (Hammour fish is locally available in the Gulf area. All other ingredients of the dish are from the region as well. The ingredients are all cooked with a low consumption of gas); and Classic Tiramisu served in a cappuccino cup (this dessert is prepared without having to use any electrical kitchen equipment and all the ingredients are from the region.). Guests may still avail this sumptuous eco-friendly treat for only AED 120 per person until 29 April 2010.
