German Grandmaster Jan Gustafsson wins Thai Open Chess Championship held at Dusit Thani Pattaya

During 11-17 April 2011, Dusit Thani Pattaya hosted the prestigious international sports event, Thailand Open Chess Championship 2011 in which some of the world’s most brilliant chess Grandmasters including GM Nigel Short, GM Sune Berg Hansen, GM Francisco Vallejo Pons and WGM Vera Nebolsina came to compete. The event brought some 250 participants from more than 40 countries and gathered players of all levels- juniors, club and professional players alike as well as some of the world’s elite with 16 Grandmasters registered including two former World Junior Champions.

German Grandmaster Jan Gustafsson won the 2011 Thai Chess Open after finishing in a three-way tie for first place and winning the title on a tiebreaker.

Gustafsson, seeded third at the start of the tournament, finished equal on points with the top two seeds, Paco Vallejo of Spain and England's Nigel Short but was awarded the 11th Thai Open title because he had played tougher opposition. Short, who lost to Gustafsson in the critical game of the tournament, was awarded the runners-up cup. The three players shared THB 220,000 (USD 7,333) in prize money.

The chess championship was organised by the Thailand Chess Association, the Bangkok Chess Club and the Tourism Authority of Thailand along with many other sponsors. Chess enthusiasts watched the event on the internet and spectators were also welcome to see games in progress at the five-star resort. Mr Chatchawal Supachayanont, General Manager of Dusit Thani Pattaya said, “it was a great honour to have hosted this prestigious event which gave us the pleasure of welcoming the world’s finest in the game of chess. Earlier this year, we took pride in hosting the Asian leg of the WTA Tour as well as the first stop to the new LPGA season. We thank you for giving us this great opportunity to promote the Kingdom around the world and to showcase Thailand and its culture as well as its capability to host international events of any kind.”
