Dusit Thani Maldives celebrates Songkran
Dusit Thani Maldives brings Thailand to the Maldives in celebration of Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, at Benjarong restaurant on Saturday, April 13, 2013.
Arriving diners’ hands will be sprinkled with water as a sign of respect while guests are treated to a special Songkran dinner buffet, featuring som tum thai gai yang jim jeaw (spicy papaya salad and chicken skewers), kuey tiew tom yung gung (spicy shrimp and noodle soup), among other Thai favourites stemming from a rich culinary heritage brought to the Maldives. Seasoned Thai chefs will engage guests with select speciality dishes perfected over time at a live cooking demonstration.
The Thai celebrate Songkran each year honouring the elderly, observing traditional customs, cleaning house and doing good deeds. The highlight of Songkran is the pouring of fragrant water on members of family, close friends and neighbours as a gesture of humility, and to symbolically welcome the new year with a fresh start. The Songkran festive spirit is shared by Thais and tourists all over Thailand from April 13 to 15 annually.
