Dusit Thani Dubai Chefs Dominate Two Prestigious Culinary Contests

Dubai, UAE – Dusit Thani Dubai chefs continue to dominate Dubai’s kitchen scene and outshine opponents in two prestigious culinary contest.

A mix of veterans and rookies alike outmuscled opponents at the Salon Culinaire 2017 and managed to reap 1-2-2 gold-silver-bronze medal tally last February 26 – March 2 at the World Trade Centre.

Meanwhile, Benjarong’s chefs Wannapa Yensiri and Napat Kaveevangso won diamond and gold, respectively at The Art of Thai Culinary 2017 organized by the Royal Thai Consulate General of Dubai last March 5.

Chief ice carver chef Wasan Mokan partnered with fellow Thai colleague and the hotel’s bellboy Vasin Khawpila for Ice Carving Team Category.

The Thai duo showcased a carefully carved ice structure of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s boat with the number nine in Thai at the center — a symbol of the late king.

“The reason behind this statue is to give reverence to our beloved king and tell the world how much we, Thai people, love and respect him,” said Mokan.

With only three weeks of training, Khawpila managed to learn the basics of ice carving.

“I was interested with the idea of creating ice structures then Chef Wasan asked if I can be his team mate for the team category,” said Khawpila.

Yensiri secured a silver for herself in the Fruit and Vegetable Showpiece category and gained a merit award for Fruit and Vegetable Carving.

Salon Culinaire mainstay Chef Christopher George has once again proven his mettle in butchery and pocketed a silver while competition newbie Chef Gaffar Khan bagged a bronze medal.

Pastry Chef Thilini Kularante’s preliminary preparations for Three Tier Wedding Cake paid off after garnering a bronze medal.

After winning gold in the first edition of the Thai Culinary contest, Yensiri once again impressed Thai food critics with her take on the famous Som Tum Thai or papaya salad.

“When cooking, the best reward I can get is to see how happy my guests are. Winning in competitions like this is just a bonus factor,” said Yensiri.

On the other hand, new comer Chef Napat Kaveevangso shrugged off first time jitters and managed to land a place for his version of Kaeng Massaman or Thai chicken curry.

“I was really excited about joining this contest for the first time. I have cooked it a lot of times for our guests, family and friends but cooking to compete was a totally different experience,” said Kaveevangso.
