Khon Kaen Overview

The thriving area of Khon Kaen, in north-east Thailand, is a suitable introduction to Thai culture and history, an area rich in natural beauty and blessed with a buzzing nightlife.

The first thing one notices about Khon Kaen is its distinct and unique character. At the Tao Village (Turtle Village), not far from the Charoen Thani Princess, you can see turtles roaming the streets, or you can explore the stunning forest and mountain range of Phu Wiang National Park, where the fossils of two dinosaurs were first discovered.

Thai silk is a much treasured material, and in the Chonnabot District, 65 kilometres from the Charoen Thani Princess, guests can buy beautiful, traditional Mat Mee Thai silk. This wonderland of patterns, colour, and fabrics is where the Queen of Thailand has her silk made.

Khon Kaen's history can be explored at the Khon Kaen National Museum, the religious site of Phrathat Khamkaen, Prasat Puai Noi, a sandstone temple, the prehistoric paintings at Phu Phan Kham National Park and the nearby Non Muang archaeological site. At Khon Kaen University you can see where the great minds of the future develop at a globally recognised centre of learning.

The Charoen Thani Princess is also situated close to the unspoiled natural beauty of the Ubonrat Dam and the Phu Wiang and Phu Pha Man national parks.

Historical Places of Interest

  • Non Muang Archaeological Site
    The ancient Chumpae town, known to local people as Non Muang, is believed to have been inhabited from prehistoric times until at least the 10th century AD. Non Muang archaeological site is an oval-shaped earth hillock with an area of 170 acres, where an ancient city of the Dvaravati period was once situated.

  • Prasat Puai Noi
    The largest Khmer sanctuary in the upper north-east, and known to local people as That Ku Thong, Prasat Puai Noi is a 12th-century Khmer temple built of sandstone. Marked with magnificently carved lintels, Prasat Puai Noi, also known as Ku Puai Noi, is regarded as the largest Khmer sanctuary found in Khon Kaen and the upper north-east. Once a Brahmin sanctuary, the ancient castle comprises three Lopburi-style brick pagodas built on the same laterite base, all facing east. Each pagoda has a smaller chapel and lintels carved in intricate designs.

  • Phu Khlao-Phu Phan Kham National Park
    The national park features two complex mountain ranges: Phu Khlao and Phu Phan Kham. Phu Khlao mountain range comprises nine hills, rich in flora and fauna. Deciduous and evergreen forests offer ample trekking opportunities. Scenic waterfalls, caves and strange-shaped rocks are also found in the mountains. Of particular interest is Pla Hai cave, which is marked with prehistoric wall paintings. A pavilion at the top of the mountain has a magnificent view. Wat Praphuttabat Phu Khlao also features caves with prehistoric paintings.

  • Phrathat Khamkaen
    Phrathat Khamkaen is one of the oldest and most significant stupas in Khon Kaen's history. Every year, on the full moon night of the sixth lunar month, a celebration is held here. Legend has it that a dead tamarind stump miraculously grew branches and leaves again after a procession bearing the holy relics of Lord Buddha went past. A pagoda was then built in the area, and later on the name of the province was actually derived from this sacred place.

  • Khon Kaen National Museum
    I-San or the north-east of Thailand is home to many ancient civilisations, including Ban Chiang, Dvaravati, Lopburi and others. The museum has exhibits from Dvaravati and Lopburi civilisations as well as prehistoric Ban Chiang, the World Heritage Site accredited by UNESCO. Khon Kaen National Museum's artefacts and objects are collected from the surrounding archaeological sites, mainly Ban Chiang.

  • Tao Village (Turtle Village)
    'Tao' in Thai means turtle, and Tao Village residents have lived harmoniously with turtles for generations. Legend has it that these turtles are the servants of holy spirits. Therefore, local people will not harm them, allowing the turtles to reside peacefully in the village from time immemorial.

  • Chonnabot Mat Mee Silk
    Chonnabot Mat Mee silk is the main product of the people of this district, and it is greatly favoured by Her Majesty the Queen, in line with the conservation of traditional Thai handicrafts. Tourists can buy beautiful, quality silk in the town at reasonable prices. To learn more about Thai culture and tradition, a permanent exhibition on silk production, patterns and old fabrics is also on display at Sala Mai Thai.

  • Ban Khok Sanga King Cobra Village
    For an exotic cobra show, visit Ban Khok Sanga King Cobra Village. Although quite frightening to many people, the villagers here earn their living by catching and breeding the king cobras. It may be difficult to imagine how to safely handle poisonous snakes, but a visit to the King Cobra Village will show you that there are people who can do so effortlessly.
