Korat Overview

Otherwise known as Nakhon Rachasima, Korat is rich in Khmer culture and full of spectacular natural wonders. From the Dusit Princess Korat hotel, all the attractions of the Isan region are within easy access.

In the centre of Korat stands the Thao Suranari Monument in commemoration of Khun Ying Mo, wife of the Deputy Governor of Khorat who rallied the people of korat to defeat the Laotian army in 1826. Behind the Thao Suranari Monument is the old city gate, the Chum Phon Gate that dates back to the 17th century. Also worth visiting is the temple of Wat Sala Loi, constructed in the shape of a Chinese junk and with a large white Buddha inside the temple. Mahawirawong National Museum houses various art objects including Khmer sandstone work, ceramics and other interesting artefacts.

Shopping in Korat is perfect for those seeking traditional Thai goods, or local handicrafts. A few miles from Dusit Princess Korat is the Dan Kwian Earthenware Village, a famous centre for pottery. The Pak Thong Chai Silk Village, approximately 20 miles from the hotel, is one of the most famous Thai silk villages in the country. The Korat Night Bazaar, which takes place in the city centre, is just a short walk from the hotel.

About 37 miles from the centre of Korat is Phimai Historical Park, one of Thailand's most important Khmer historical sites with the most impressive shrine that has been painstakingly reconstructed from the pink-red and more durable white sandstone blocks found in the complex.

Golf enthusiasts can tee off not far from the Dusit Princess Korat. The Country Club KhaoYai features an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course in the scenic Khao Yai mountains.

  • Phimai Historical Park
    The largest sandstone sanctuary in Thailand situated in the center of Phimai Ancient City, which has been preserved as the National Historical Park, Phimai Sanctuary was built in the 12th century, some years before Angkor Wat, during the reign of King Suriyaworaman I. It is in the shape of a rectangle and is 565 metres wide and 1030 metres long, facing the South, where there are ancient routes cut from Angkor to the city of Yasothon Pura, the capital of the empire at that time.

  • Muang Sema Historical Site
    Muang Sema was built around the 12th Buddhist century and flourished during the Dhawarawadi period. Around the 16th-17th Buddhist centuries, the city was under Khmer rule. There are several ruins of Buddhist ordination halls as well as debris made of laterite and sandstone. Visitors can still see evidence of city moats and some earth walls. Many artifacts have been unearthed, including the reclining sandstone Buddha image and an old religious relic, which is now in Wat Thammachak Semaram.

  • Nang Ram Sanctuary
    Nang Ram Sanctuary was once the 'Arokhayasan' or a nursing place of the ancient Khmers. The sanctuary was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Chaiworaman VII, comprising two groups of buildings. The more complete pagodas face the east, surrounded by a laterite wall. To the northeast, outside the wall is a pool and three stupas assumed to be the residence of medical men, where many beautiful lintels are found.

  • Phanom Wan Sanctuary
    A magnificent Khmer sanctuary, dating back to the 12th century. Prasat Hin Phanom Wan or Phanom Wan Sanctuary is a Khmer religious place, dating back to the 12th century. The area was once known as Rattanapura, a prosperous Khmer town in the past. According to the inscriptions found at the site, the sanctuary was used as a Hindu monastery and later became a Buddhist site.

  • Phimai National Museum
    The center of cultural heritage of the Northeast, displaying the most extensive collection of lintels in Thailand, Phimai National Museum is an archaeological museum, which displays artifacts collected from the lower part of the Northeast. The museum has the most extensive collection of lintels in Thailand, collected from sanctuaries in Korat and neighboring provinces such as Phimai, Phanom Rung, Phanomwan and other Khmer sites.

    Literally, Dan Kwian means 'bullock cart checkpoint.' The village was so named because it used to be a rest area for caravan traders, who traveled in bull carts from Nakhon Ratchasima to Buriram, Surin and further onward to lower Khmer. In the old days, local people of the district made different types of pottery from the clay from the banks of the Moon River. All these products were made in great quantities and bartered for food or necessary materials as well as sold in other regions.

    One of the most famous silk villages in Thailand, showcasing elaborate silk weaving process, and offering beautiful Thai silk at reasonable price, Korat silk is famous for its high quality. Pak Thong Chai Village is one of Thailand's most famous silk-weaving villages, where villagers retain their creative skills in producing beautiful Korat-texture silk. Though many Thai silk factories have been set up here at the village, independent local weavers still produce exquisite hand-woven Korat silk as souvenir items.

Conveniently located in downtown Korat, and offering various kinds of local products, visitors can buy silk, local weaving cloth, ceramics, artificial flowers and many others. Korat Craft Center is in front of the Provincial Hall, easily accessible from the DUsit Princess Korat.

  • Klang Dong Market
    The largest fruit market in Korat. This Northeastern province of Thailand grows several delicious fruits. The largest fruit market of Korat is Klang Dong Market, where products from Nakhon Ratchasima and nearby provinces are sold. The most famous fruit of Klang Dong Market is custard apple, well known for its delicious taste.To go to Klang Dong Market, take highway No 2. The fruit market is some 20 kilometres from Pak Chong, before going up Khao Yai (100 kilometres from Korat city.)
