Dusit Smiles Inc. donates first round of funds for cleft repair surgery

August 2018
Dusit Smiles Inc. officially kicked off the first of its donations to subsidize funding for eligible children on Guam in need of cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries.

In a recent check presentation, Dusit Smiles Inc. official partner and physician Dr. Darius Richardson of Pacific Surgical Arts accepted a total of $13,716.54.

The payment covers a total of five surgeries among three children. Procedures include primary lip and palate repair, revision of palatoplasty, and a bone graft to the alveolar cleft.

Two-year old Kai’ane Jayne Taimanglo received two surgeries as well as two-year old Jehu J. Angor. Funding for the eldest patient eight-year old Aaron Cruz covered a single procedure.

“From spare change collected in our donation boxes to tens of thousands of dollars fundraised through our annual golf tournament – these generous contributions have made it possible for these children to enjoy a lifetime of smiles,” said Marina Guerrero, Dusit Smiles Inc. Board Member.

Dusit Smiles Inc. is a local 501c non-profit organization inspired by the global Operation Smiles entity which has partnered with Dusit International over the years to provide for cleft repair surgery in Thailand and abroad.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are facial and oral malformations that occur very early in pregnancy, while the baby is developing inside the mother. Clefting results when there is not enough tissue in the mouth or lip area and the tissue that is available does not join together properly.

It is estimated that, worldwide, a child is born every 3 minutes with a cleft — about one in 500 to 750 births.

Local physicians partnered with Dusit Smiles Inc. have historically performed up to 25 cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries a year on Guam.

A total of $77,000.00 has been raised to date through Dusit Smiles Inc. exclusively for children on Guam.
